Analytical Chemistry
This laboratory uses conventional functions of overall chemical analysis as well as
procedures which provide direct support to the design and fabrication of fiber-reinforced
composites. Particular emphasis is devoted to materials of the carbon-carbon,
carbon-phenolic, metal matrix and ceramic matrix families, where individual filaments,
yarns, and composite structures are analyzed.
The analytical chemistry services are available for qualitative and quantitative
elemental analysis of solids, liquids, and gases. These services extend from wet
chemistry techniques to sophisticated spectrochemical procedures that enable precise
measurement of trace elements in the part per million range. The capabilities of the
Analytical Chemistry Laboratory are as follows:
Composition and Property Analysis Composition Structures Analysis
Analytical Instrumentation - Flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer
- Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen analyzer
- Mercury porsizer
- B.E.T. surface area analyzer
- Helium pycnometer (1-135 cc samples)
- Bulk and apparent density / Archimedes immersion porosity (D & P)
