Carbon/Carbon Nosetips / Leading Edges
Fiber Materials, Inc. is
the major supplier of Carbon/Carbon nosetips and leading edge materials. Initial construction
consists of an orthogonally woven preform, using fibers in the X, Y, and Z directions.
Fiber types, volume fraction and spacing can be varied in all directions to meet customer design requirements.
FMI® woven reinforcements are impregnated with resin or pitch and carbonized to yield finished, fully
dense composites using well controlled temperature and pressure processes.
FMI is the selected supplier of C/C nosetips for the Peacekeeper MK-21 Re-entry Vehicle and the Trident D-5 Re-entry Body.
FMI
is also involved in contracted research and development programs for the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force for advanced nosetips,
leading edges and thermal protection systems in support of emerging U.S. Air Force and
U.S. Navy strategic systems and hypersonic vehicles for use in Theater and National Missile Defense.
In addition, FMI also supplies 3-D quartz phenolic nosetips and quartz phenolic heatshields for the THAAD Kill Vehicle. For more information, refer to the section on Composite Materials.
