Metallography & Morphology
This laboratory conducts macroscopic and microscopic examinations of materials and
structures. These studies are used to assist with design problems in the development
of unique composite structures and to aid in the interpretation of test and/or
performance data.
Surface analysis at the laboratory comprised of material constituents,
structural geometries, fiber orientations, porosity, contamination, elemental composition,
and other features can be studied on either a macro or micro basis using a variety of
electron-optical systems.
The capabilities of the Metallography and Morphology Laboratory are as follows:
Sophisticated Apparatus
- Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
- Olympus PME metallograph with photographic capabilities
- Olympus stereo microscope with Polaroid and 35mm
- Syntron laboratory polishers
- Buehler polishing tables
