Oxidation Resistance

Energy Materials Testing Laboratory HomepageEMTL performs comprehensive studies of material behavior in an air or oxygen environment.

Oxidation Cycling
For testing applications where rapid thermal changes are required under repetitive conditions, EMTL offers a multi-zone oxidation cycling furnace.  Alloys, ceramics, and coated carbon composites are a few of the materials tested.

  • Three-zones; maximum profile versatility
  • Test temperatures to 1650°C (3000°F)
  • Heating rates to over 500°C/sec (932°F/sec)
  • Specialty performance cycles

Mechanical Properties
Material properties for tension, compression, 3- and 4-point flexure and shear are determined in the EMTL High Temperature Air Facility.  Sensitive ceramic matrix composites and coated materials are subject to a variety of environments, temperatures, heat rates, and load-strain conditions to establish the design database required by the customer.

  • Temperatures to 3200°F
  • Alignments better than 1% bending
  • Specialty fixturing
  • Extensive experience

Computer Controlled Testing
EMTL offers computer control and data acquisition on many of its test systems.   Real-time conversion and display of test data in engineering units provides maximum flexibility in the monitoring and recording of each test.  Diskette, streaming tape and reel-to-reel tape media are all available for storage of test results and to EMTL customers.

  • 8 portable computer test stations
  • Over 250 analog I/O channels
  • Sampling rates to 100 KHz
  • Digitizing of recorder charts
  • Reconfigurable software for custom test formats
  • Modem transfer capability for test results

Data Analysis
Each test station is equipped with least squares analysis software.  In addition, all test results can be up-loaded to an in-house HP 900-350 computer system for more detailed analyses.
