Thermal Protection Systems

Fiber Materials, Inc. is developing advanced thermal protection systems for a variety of hypersonic applications for the Army, Navy and Air Force.  In support of the U.S. Army Atmospheric Interceptor Technology (AIT) Program and THAAD, FMI® is developing 3-D quartz phenolic nosetips / 2-D quartz phenolic heatshields and advanced composite shrouds with integral substructures (integrated structures).

Shroud Assembly FMI is also developing a thermal protection system for long duration in atmospheric flight.  A primary concept uses carbon fiber reinforced carbon (CFRC) sandwiched between an inner and outer surface plate of carbon/carbon.  This thermal protection system is designed with minimum weight and thickness.

Carbon foams are being developed and evaluated with and without ceramic coatings (used to improve insulation and oxidation resistant properties) for use in hypersonic missile heatshields that are required to fly extended times at high velocities in the atmosphere (severe thermal environment).
